The Davis lineage traces back from Utah to a Quaker heritage in Ohio, then to New Jersey by way of Virginia and Pennsylvania, and finally to Long Island, New York. Because the immigrant to America, John Davis, was traditionally a "singing Quaker", i.e., probably a "Ranter" the researcher was tempted to suppose he was among a party of covenanters, who had come to Long Island as exiles from Edinburgh, Scotland. This idea was quelched when subsequent research discovered that this group came to New Jersey three years following John's marriage at Oyster Bay.
