It was inbreeding among the Quakers in the early settlement of Pilesgrove that brought this Davis lineage together with the one from Oyster Bay on Long Island. These Quakers were not averse to (taking an oath to) serve in public office so that David Davis, who preserved his family record after 1754, began it with the “"Name of God”." [10] Isaac must have been the oldest child of John and Dorothy (Gotherson) Davis, who married in 1680. Hence, the boy could hardly have been out of his teens by the time he had a child (Abigail) old enough to marry Elisha Bassett in 1718. The wife of his younger brother, John, who had married about 1712, seems to have been daughter of a presumed step-brother of Dorothy's.
